Opportunities and Gratitude

Starting every morning with worship and devotion is such an incredible way to begin the year. I never quite understand why I can’t make this a habit when I’m back home after POWER, because it really sets the tone for the day and makes it that much better. Maybe this will be the year I figure it out.

This morning, Cody introduced a new song to the worship lineup: “Tremble” (Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble), and it hit just right. Brian then gave a quick recap of each previous message, reminding us what we’ve been carrying in our pockets—and, let me tell you, they’re starting to get heavy.

Brian shared a story about David Blair and his unintended impact on the Titanic—or rather, his lack of impact. Blair had the key to the lockbox containing the binoculars for the crow’s nest but was transferred off the ship at the last minute. He forgot to leave the key, which left the crew without access to the binoculars. While it wasn’t the sole reason for the disaster, it was undoubtedly a missed opportunity.

We then turned to Ephesians: “Be careful how you live because the days are evil.” Brian defined opportunity as waiting to move in rhythm with God. He shared that the Latin root of the word “opportu” refers to a ship waiting to port at the right moment. He then guided us to Psalm 90:12: “Teach us to number our days.” The message was clear: Redeem the day, not just the year. Be specific and detailed with the Lord.

Brian closed by giving us time to find someone in the room and share how they’ve impacted us this week. Watching the room fill with gratitude and encouragement was truly inspiring. It’s moments like these that remind me how powerful fellowship is.

Takeaways from the Day:
From the Mini Mission 1 morning session: Joel shared how grateful he was that the roof was finished, keeping the rain off our heads. Isn’t it amazing how God held off the rain until we had the roof ready to shelter us? It’s another reminder of His perfect timing.

Lunch today was a feast: sloppy joes, pork bean soup, and a Deviled Egg BLT. I’d never had a Deviled Egg BLT before, but now I know it’s something I’ll definitely be having again. From Food Crew: Chris Clark shared how he’s constantly amazed at how Micah Davenport pours his heart and soul into every meal. While most of us are focused on the meal at hand, Micah is already planning three meals ahead.

Afternoon Projects:
At the Chavez family home, it was incredible to see other members of the community joining the project. Many were people POWER has partnered with in the past, and they came to help get this house finished. My Spanish isn’t great, but I found myself in a conversation with a young man while we worked. We talked about the strength Christ gives us to accomplish anything and all we’re able to do through Him. It was such a joy to see God breaking down the language barrier, allowing us to connect and share about our walks in faith.

Even though it rained today, we still managed to get a lot done at both sites.

Evening Reflections:
Dinner was spaghetti and meatballs, which was followed by a tribute to Bryan Albright. I didn’t know Bryan personally, but through the words and tears of my POWER brothers, I learned he was an exemplary model of a warrior for Christ, someone I aspire to be like.

Bryan Albright, thank you for your impact on POWER Ministry. Your dedication has allowed so many of us new guys to reap the bountiful harvest of what you sowed. May your example inspire us and future generations of POWER missionaries to continue building this ministry so that others can witness the glory of God.

Day 5 was filled with reminders of God’s timing, the power of fellowship, and the opportunities He places before us. Here’s to making the most of every moment He gives us. Time for rest. good night, everyone.
